So as most of you know by now, I moved a little over a week ago and I still haven't come down from the high of being in the new place. Nesting, admittedly, is something I love to do. Toss in the fact that I've got a Mom who's a designer and a new roommate with an impeccable eye for interior design and you've got the makings for something pretty fantastic. Yummy.
However, our current predicament is as follows: Do we turn the living room into a living room-meets-dining room so as to facilitate my entertaining jaunts or do we stay true to the typical living room standards? While at first glance, it would seem I'm initially drawn to the first option, I'm not entirely sold on it either. The size of our kitchen has allowed us to put in a high bar table with two bar stools which means there is definitely a place to cozy up to your meal. But, there's also something to be said about having the option of setting a table for more than two. Floor plans abound are in our immediate future, of that I am sure. Because one way or another, I'm confident we'll reach a happy median.
That said, how do the rest of you utilize your one communal room? I'm talking to you, apartment dwellers. And which do you weigh more heavily? A room to unwind or a room to entertain?
Most people I know opt for living spaces without the dining option, so there's something sorta novel about attending a sit-down dinner in NYC. But I know you've never had a real living room in the city, so that might feel more inspired and cozy to you. Do you gravitate more towards a dinner for four, or a bigger, informal group meal?
ReplyDeleteIf a new piece of furniture is in the budget, a table with a leaf could be a happy medium. Functions as a console when you want your living room to be a space to relax. (And it saves you some serious space.) Then when you're ready to entertain, it becomes a dining table. It could even serve as a buffet table when you want to have a big group over.
Kiira, you really don't need to relax. Get your ass back in the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI'm expecting a dinner party invitation any day now.
(I do like the idea of a long narrow buffet style table that could cozy up nicely against a wall- There is a found object at Anthro that would be amazing!)
katie - always appreciate your feedback in this department. ing has a console that opens up into a round table that could potentially seat 4 so that's a VERY strong possibility.
ReplyDeletearax - aggressive. and naturally, i dig.
My friend got this amazing table http://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/dining-tables/span-espresso-gateleg-table/s501479 and it folds up nicely and you can tuck it away. It is amazing quality and does not look like a folding table once you fold it up. I also think it could fit 6. It is worth a look.
ReplyDeletemegs - awesome! thanks so much for the link. totally dig that table.
